What are the conditions for opening an account in Luxembourg?

Just arrived in Luxembourg? In most cases, you’ll need a current account with a Luxembourg bank fairly quickly. This will enable you to get paid, pay your rent or simply shop for what you need.

To open an account in Luxembourg, you’ll need to fulfil at least one of these conditions:

  • Be a resident in Luxembourg,
  • Have an employment contract in Luxembourg (fixed-term, permanent, internship, etc.),
  • Be a student in Luxembourg,
  • Be eligible for a CEDIES loan: student grant paid by Luxembourg if at least one parent works in Luxembourg,
  • Earn an income in Luxembourg, e.g. retirement pension, even if not a Luxembourg resident,
  • Collect rent in Luxembourg.

You can open an account even before arriving to Luxembourg, as soon as you have your employment contract!

What documents do I need to provide to open an account?

When opening your new account, we’ll ask you to provide certain documents.

Whether or not you’re a resident, you must supply the following documents:

  • An ID document,
  • Your employment contract (if it is dated within the last three months), or a recent payslip (dated within the last three months),
  • Proof of address: certificate of residence dated within the last three months, electricity, gas, water bill, home insurance, certificate, or landline bill (dated within the last three months),
  • Your Tax number.

Where can I find my tax number?

In Luxembourg, your tax number is not included on official identity documents. However, this 13-digit number can be found on your social security card.

In France, the tax identification number (TIN/NIF) is assigned when the person is registered in the tax authority’s databases. This 13-digit number is also known as the “reference tax number” (or “SPI” number, which stands for “Simplification of Tax Procedures” in French). This reference tax number can be found on your pre-filled income tax return, and on your income, housing and property tax notices.

In Belgium, the TIN is the 11-digit national number (NN). It is usually found on the back of your ID or social security card (SIS card).

In Germany, the TIN is not included on official identity documents. The 11-digit Identifikationsnummer has existed since 2008. It can be found in the letter relating to the allocation of this identification number (Mitteilungsschreiben über die Zuordnung einer Identifikationsnummer).
