What is discretionary management?

Discretionary management is entrusting the management of your investments to a professional, such as a bank or an asset management company.

More specifically, experts are responsible for making decisions: choosing investment vehicles, allocating assets and making adjustments over time. These decisions are taken based on your financial objectives, your investment horizon and your risk profile. You remain the owner of your assets, while specialists take care of managing your portfolio.

How does discretionary management of your investments work?

In practice, the setup takes place in three steps:

  1. It all starts with defining your investor profile: investment horizon, financial objectives and risk tolerance. You can define it directly from your Web Banking or with an advisor in branch.
During this stage, you can also indicate your sustainability preferences. For example, if you wish to orient your investments towards companies that integrate environmental, social and/or governance (ESG) criteria.
  2. Once the mandate is in place, the portfolio manager takes over: he selects the investment vehicles and adapts your portfolio to market developments according to your profile.
However, you can always adjust your profile or terminate the mandate at any time.
  3. You benefit from expert monitoring and can consult the evolution of your investments at any time via your Web Banking.

This management approach is available within different investment wrappers. In Luxembourg, life insurance, securities accounts and capitalization contracts are the most used wrappers for discretionary management.

Discretionary management or self-directed management: what are the differences?

Do you need financial knowledge?

In self-directed management: yes.
In discretionary management: no – no knowledge or experience is required, but you must validate your general understanding of risks.

How much time does it require?

Self-directed management requires regular monitoring of the markets.
In discretionary management, the portfolio manager handles decisions and monitoring on your behalf.

Do you keep control over your investments?

In self-directed management, you make all decisions yourself.
In discretionary management, you define the framework at the outset and can adjust your profile or terminate the mandate at any time.

The benefits of discretionary management

  • Professional expertise
Portfolio managers dedicate their time to analyse markets, identify opportunities and diversify your investments while taking your risk profile into account. You benefit from expertise that would be difficult to acquire on your own.
  • Time saving
No need to monitor stock market prices every day. Your manager handles it for you within the framework of the mandate you have defined.
  • Optimised investments diversification
The manager allocates your investments among different asset classes, geographical areas and business sectors.
  • Peace of mind
During periods of high volatility, the manager adheres to the defined framework and avoids decisions taken in haste.

Good to know: why define your investor profile?

As part of the discretionary investment services and in accordance with the European MiFID directive, it is necessary to define your investor profile.
A questionnaire is used to assess your investment experience, your investment horizon, your risk tolerance and your sustainability preferences.
Thanks to this analysis, we can define your investor profile, based on which an investment strategy tailored to your situation and objectives will be proposed.
