Debit cards versus Credit cards

comparaison carte de credit et carte de debit

The debit cards used in Luxembourg are V PAY cards.

BGL BNP Paribas also offers a range of different credit cards. The main difference between these is the services they include.

The credit cards available are VISA, Mastercard Gold, Mastercard Platinum and Mastercard Elite.

Who is eligible?

In Luxembourg, debit cards are available to clients aged 12 and over. They are automatically issued to anyone who holds a current account with BGL BNP Paribas.

Credit cards are available to anyone over the age of 18, based on a creditworthiness check by your bank.

Where are payments accepted?

Debit cards allow you to make purchases anywhere in Europe, as well as eight other countries.

Credit cards are an international payment method accepted worldwide.

Cash withdrawals

Withdrawals made using your debit card are free at all BGL BNP Paribas ATMs in Luxembourg. They are also free abroad using the BNP Paribas group ATM network and the Deutsche Bank network in Germany.

With a credit card, withdrawals are charged at national rates within the BNP Paribas group ATM network (Global Network & Global Alliance).

This rate is EUR 2,50 + 2% of the amount withdrawn.

Instant or deferred payment

With a debit card, your bank account is immediately charged.

However, credit cards allow you to defer the payment of your purchases.

Card limits

With a debit card, you can make purchases and cash withdrawals up to a maximum of €2,500 per week.

There is no default limit on a credit card, so you can continue using it until your personal limit is reached. This limit will depend on your financial situation.

Insurance and assistance

While debit cards don’t offer any specific insurance or assistance services, credit cards provide both, for both you and your family:

  • Travel,

  • Home,

  • Medical costs,

  • Repatriation.
