My managers have done everything possible to help me combine work and sport.

My name’s Charline Mathias, I’m 28 and I have been working at BGL BNP Paribas part time since September 2017.

You’re probably wondering why someone fresh out of university is starting her career part time. The reason is that I’m a high-level athlete.

Here’s my story: I was six when I started athletics. At the age of 15, I specialised in running, more specifically middle-distance running – 800 metres.

When I was young, I always combined my study with sport. At university, I reached a turning point in athletics and managed to establish myself at a high level, enabling me to compete internationally. I’ve had the chance to go to the Olympics, World and European Championships, and other international events.

“From the outset, my managers have done everything possible to help me combine work and sport.”

It was when I returned to Luxembourg, after finishing my studies in France, that I joined BGL BNP Paribas as part of the graduate programme in 2017.

I now work in the Client Data Improvement department. From the outset, my managers have done everything possible to help me combine work and sport. The support of my managers and co-workers has made me calmer and given me greater motivation to break through in my sport.

The combination of study/work and sport has not always been easy. Here’s my normal week in figures: 20 hours of work at the bank, 10-12 trainings and 2 physiotherapy sessions. It’s a delicate balance, one that is easily disturbed and requires lots of organisation, discipline and adaptability.

My work at BGL BNP Paribas keeps me grounded and gives me some structure, while athletics often takes me out of my comfort zone and disrupts my daily life with frequent travel for both training camps and events. What the bank and running have in common is that success and failure are defined by tangible results.

To round off, I’m very grateful not just that the bank has allowed me to keep working and competing, but also for the support that I receive from my managers and co-workers.
